Emergency Dentistry in Pleasanton, CA

Call us if you are experiencing a dental emergency. Common dental emergencies include:

Bitten Lip or Tongue

A bitten lip or tongue severe enough to draw blood needs attention. The first thing you want to do is clean the wound with some clean water and apply a cold compress. You can use a towel or wash cloth, run it under cold water, and use it to apply pressure to avoid excess swelling. Once you have done this, give us a call so we can help you determine the severity of the bite and if your child needs medical attention.

Object Caught In Teeth

If you or your child has an object stuck between their teeth, you can try gently removing it with dental floss. If this does not work, give us a call. Do not try to remove or dislodge the object with any kind of plastic, metal, or sharp tool.

Broken, Chipped, or Fractured Tooth

In the case of a broken or chipped tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water before using a cold compress to prevent swelling. You can use a towel or wash cloth, run it under cold water, and use it to apply pressure. If the tooth is chipped, try to find the tooth fragment, and keep it in a safe place. Call us immediately.

Knocked-Out Tooth

If you knock out a permanent tooth, timing is very important to save the tooth. You need to get to a dentist or endodontist within 30 minutes. Your first step is to pick up the tooth by the crown, never by the root. Next rinse off the tooth with water only. Do NOT use any products such as soap on your tooth and do not scrub or dry it off. Do not attempt to put the tooth back in your mouth yourself unless you cannot get medical help within 30 minutes. If this is the case, return the tooth to its socket and hold it in place. If the tooth cannot be immediately placed back into the socket, make sure to keep it moist. The best way to transport the tooth is a container of milk. If you do not have milk, saliva is next best option, if possible, followed by saline. Do not keep the tooth in regular tap water. Next, go see a dentist or go to the hospital! Ideally you should go to the dentist within 30 minutes, but it is possible to save a tooth even outside of that time frame. Time is the most important factor with a knocked-out tooth.

Loose Tooth

Between the ages of about 6 – 13 your child will begin to lose baby teeth. A loose baby tooth is not an emergency, but it can become one. To avoid being swallowed or inhaled, lose baby teeth should be removed. If you or your child has a lose tooth that is not a baby tooth, call us immediately.

Toothache

In the case of a tooth ache, inspect the teeth to help determine the cause. First rinse with warm water, then check to see if anything is caught between them. If the pain persists, you can apply cold compress to help with the pain or take appropriate pain relievers orally. Don’t apply heat or topical pain relievers as this can lead to more damage. Call us to schedule an appointment immediately.

Broken Jaw

If your you or your child has sustained an injury to their jaw, use a cold compress to manage swelling. Call us immediately or head to the hospital. Jaw injuries are typically a result of a blow to the head. Head injuries can very dangerous. They can even be life threatening, so medical attention is urgent.
